Research with OPNET: Performance study of an optimized dynamic source routing (ODSR) protocol (Extended Abstract)

The Dynamic Source Routing protocol (DSR) is a simple and efficient routing protocol designed specifically for use in multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks of mobile nodes. Using DSR, the network is completely self-organizing and self-configuring, requiring no existing network infrastructure or administration. The Internet draft defines DSR. The protocol allows each MANET node to have multiple routes in the route chache. However, it does not specifiy a mechnism to prioritize those routes. In this paper, we will set up a performance model to optimize the route selection mechanism by relabeling ad hoc routes with the availability metrics derived from imortant factors. Three factors that are especially important for routing in wireless ad hoc networks are random topology changes, effect of mobility and effect of battery level on a node's availability. However DSR does not incorporate these factors, considering these factors to prioritize the routes we can optimize DSR. In this study we simulate DSR and Optimized DSR (ODSR), compare their performances and analyze the improvement in throughput when using ODSR.
