THE UNIVERSITY
Norfolk State University is a state supported, multipurpose, urban university located
in the metropolitan Tidewater area. The University is fully accredited by the Southern
Association of Schools and Colleges and serves over 7,500 students.
COMPUTER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
The Computer Science Department, in keeping with the University's mission,
provides qualitative and varied education experiences for students. Computer Science Students
are prepared for career opportunities or graduate study in the area of Computer
Science. In addition, the Department provides service courses to assist students of all majors
in mastering fundamental computer concepts and a variety of programming languages.
The program was initiated in 1982 as an outgrowth of a Mathematics
Degree program. The number of majors enrolled in computer science has grown
over the last 30 years.
The undergraduate program in Computer Science is accredited by Computing Accreditation
Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org).
The Department is located in the remodeled Robinson Technology Center (RTC).
Instructional and research facilities are also located in this building.
GENERAL DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
All Computer Science Majors must complete 120 credit hours including the University's General education requirements
to qualify for the Bachelor's degree. Additionally, the Computer Science department requires that all
Computer Science Majors:
- Meet prerequisites or their equivalents prior to enrolling in advanced computer science courses
- Earn at least a grade of "C" in all science, mathematics and computer science courses. In addition,
majors with a specialty in Computer Engineering must recieve a "C" or better in all engineering courses,
and majors with a specialty in Computer Information Science must recieve a "C" or better in all courses taken in the
School of Business
- Are not permitted to enroll in any course whose content is prerequisite, or assumed knowledge, for a higher level
course that the student has already completed
CURRICULUM
The Computer Science program at Norfolk State University is designed to provide students
with fundamental training in the theoretical and practical aspects of
computer science. Coupled with the
program's strong mathematics component, this training provides graduates
with the necessary background for
employment in a wide variety of computing fields or for a smooth entry into graduate level study.
Program requirements include a 27 hour computer science core, 20 semester hours of mathematics,
and 18 semester hours of computer science electives. Students can elect to follow the general
computer science degree program, or options in Computer Information Science or Computer Engineering.
PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The CS undergraduate program at NSU prepares its graduates to achieve the following career and
professional goals:
- To work successfully both independently and in team environments.
- To communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- To pursue advanced study or engage in professional practice within the
computing profession.
- To engage in the practice of life-long learning to enhance their capabilities.
- To practice ethical behavior in their professional endeavors.

and design methodologies.
